I work with this stuff at work all day anyway, but it's still fuckin awesome to see when people do crazy shit like this with it. They also use this stuff in really really high end microphones.

I got it from here It has a bunch of other things, like aerogel. which I was researching how to produce a few months ago. And non-newtonian fluids. Search "non newtonian fluid" on youtube and you'll get some really freaky looking videos.

It's called a ferrofluid. Imagine if water was magnetic. It's complicated with how to make this stuff, but basically, the metal spikes appear to have some electromagnets in them. They turn the current in the magnets on and off and the magnetic fluid will actually start to climb up and down the magnets like you saw in the video.

I like how the surfaces are so perfectly reflective they look like they are CGI.
