I have nothing original to say anymore.
Yay! I am acquiring an (illegal) copy of Perfume's latest (released two days ago) album, ⊿ (トライアングル / Triangle)
    =D
    Happy happy!
It's taking aaaaaages - current time says 2.5 hours, for some reason. wtf?
My excuse it that after listening to this, I'll be able to decide whether I'd prefer to buy the album, or the photo-book (there are no full scans of this lying round the intarwabs - it's weird)... In the end, maybe my conscience will talk me out of both, since I has NO MONEYS. But also, my conscience is what's urging me to buy in the first place...
(I want to pre-order the new Versailles CD, too).

So last night something nearby got struck by lightning. I know because it made a terrific bang. Scared the shit out of my sister, with whom I sat up for another hour or two watching a cheesy Lindsey Lohan movie even though I had just gone to bed.
I think it might have been the gum trees in the backyard, but it's hard to tell... isn't something like that supposed to be obvious? There is a large branch that's almost fallen off, and since there were no really strong winds and it was a tiny, tiny storm.... do I count it as evidence???
(also, the intercom system went nuts, as usual, and I think our kitchen clock (part of intercom) is now broken).

    Perthites:
    Anyone want to see this?
Don't Swallow..., a standup-type show at the Blue Room, by [info]harveystoat, the guy who hosts the Supanova cosplay comps, this year's Genderfuck Ball, etc, etc. He's pretty awesome.
    Any takers?

I like these things too :) I'm making my way through the archives of DAR, a pretty relaxed webcomic. So far it's pretty good. Apparently this woman is now married to a guy, lol.

This is very similar to a flash-mob I would like to do...
Also, how could you refuse this? (No, really, how could you do it in front of all those people? o_0)

DO WANT It's only about $385.... TT_TT But it's so pretty... and it has cake on it...
    *longing*
and this :) Only $55 =DDD so tempted. That's actually cheaper than here... And it folds!

Monkey Island summary via Flash movie I've never played Monkey Island, but LOLOL it looks awesome. Will it be as awesome as this summary, though?

And finally, after a billion links (flist, are you sick of these yet?), here is a meme - so happy, I was really in a meme mood :)

Comment to this entry with "words" and i'll give you 5 words that make me think of you. explain them to everyone else if you so wish....
    Thanks to [info]narcolepticnemu.

    1. Perth
Ah, Perth. You are so tiny. So tiny that when you find out that you have sixtwo degress of seperation with someone, instead of saying "oh wow, it's such a small world", we just say "Ha ha, we got Perthed" >_< (You think I'm joking?).
I do love my 'dull' little city, though. It has a pretty river and it's relaxing. We don't get many awesome people coming to visit us, though. And all our own talent moves away ASAP.

    2. StickyCandy dfh;s 8D
Come here little child, I has candy for you....
Man, I miss my job making roc candy -_-

    3. Shoebox
Actually, I do have kind of a hard time throwing away shoeboxes - they're useful, especially to create split-level shelves in your bookshelf etc.
Man, I haven't read [info]shoebox_project in ages, although I've been getting cravings again recently. So sad, I don't think they'll ever update again =(
    Where is my Sirius/Remus???

    4. Art
Me? You associate me with art?
Actually, I did TEE art in highschool. My favourite movement was Impressionism, it totally rocked, Monet is awesome.
I haven't really drawn anything this year -____- My productivity is so dead x_x
I looked at [info]narcolepticnemu's fics-for-the-year meme the other day and almost cried. I used to churn things out like that. You stupid muses! I'll hunt you down and raep youuuuuu *sobs in a corner*.

    5. Discworld \8D/
It's so sad that Terry Pratchett will probably never write a book again (or so I hear). Actually, I still haven't read the 'latest' one, Making Money.

    Shameless comedy plug...
    Hello!

I've got a new stand- up show starting in about two weeks - and I'd like you to come and see it. It's called "Don't Swallow: A Handy Guide To Keeping Your Head Above Water (In An Ocean Filled With Shit)" and it's on at The Blue Room Theatre, Northbridge from July 23rd - August 8th.

For more info and ticket bookings - check out www.pacs.org.au

It'll be a lot of fun, there's plenty of swearing and screaming and a Manic Depressive Guinea Pig... and a ukulele... all sorts of good things. Plus, if you come on a Saturday - you can see it - then go to Sin!

Booking for my new show are now open! (Plus: John gets reviewed for his wrestling.)
    Hey- o!

My new one- man show, "Don't Swallow: A Handy Guide To Keeping Your Head Above Water (In An Ocean Filled With Shit) is about to begin! Running from July 23rd - August 8th, it's at The Blue Room Theatre in Northbridge.

Tickets can NOW be booked online at www.pacs.org.au, we'd love to see you there!

Oh... and the fansite for the Australasian Wrestling Federation carried a two- line rundown of my face- off with purple- pants- wearing wonderboy Kid Dynamite at Sydney Supanova... he had interrupted the Cosplay Competition the day before, so I climbed into the ring and challenged him to an arm- wrestle. It's the best review ever: "The announcer actually looked strong in the arms and he proved this by defeating Dynamite."

Well, I'm pleased that the Mighty Robertson Biceps are looking nice, but I mostly won because another wrestler kicked him in the head. However - yeah! That's one step closer to the championship for me!

Materialists Allowed to Challenge Neo-Darwinian Orthodoxy, Intelligent Design Proponents Are Not
The ever-entertaining Evolution News & Views site from the Discovery Institute has a new piece up called "Expelled Exposed" Is Wrong: Materialists Allowed to Challenge Neo-Darwinian Orthodoxy, Intelligent Design Proponents Are Not. In it Casey Luskin tries to make the case that disagreement with Darwin and the modern synthesis is tolerated only if dissenting scientist vehemently rejects ID/creationism as a viable alternative explanation.

Luskin frames much of his argument around the film Expelled!, and the response by the National Centet for Science Education. Briefly, the NCSE insists that all orthodoxy can be challenged in science, and that IDers are ought to conduct experiments, collect data, and submit their findings for peer review, just like everyone else. He also shares quotes from several prominent scientists and publications like Nature pointing out that dissenting from the orthodoxy in evolutionary theory can be dangerous. Most important, though, is the adherence among modern scientists to materialism, to naturalism.

It's worth reading the piece, if for nothing else to take a look at some of the links, and read about some of the valid evolutionary controversies to be found in modern biology. For the sake of brevity, I'll skip right to Luskin's conclusion:

The NCSE would have you believe that proponents of intelligent design have an equal footing to challenge neo-Darwinism as any other scientist. But clearly this is not reality: Articles by scientists in scientific journals not only indicate that it is politically "dangerous" for even materialists to challenge neo-Darwinism as they risk "becom[ing] a target of orthodox evolutionary biology," but also that those who do challenge the orthodoxy must be careful to pledge allegiance to materialistic explanations of evolution and to not provide "ammunition" to intelligent design. The scientific literature has made it clear that dissent from the modern synthesis has potential to be tolerated only if it does not support intelligent design. The NCSE's notion that "[t]here is no unchallengeable orthodoxy," is plainly false, once you understand that while the orthodoxy is not simply neo-Darwinism, but materialistic accounts of evolution.

Luskin, not surprisingly, disagrees with the commitment to materialism. This is fine, but he doesn't even seem to understand the rational basis for it, or the success of materialisim and naturalism in all of the natural sciences. I think it comes down to the idea that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Papers supporting "Darwinism" get published because they are built on a solid foundation of evidence. Even if it is the case that scientists are too eager to accept these ideas, or that each paper does not get scrutinized from the ground up because the baseline theory is accepted, this only means that more research should be done, results should be scrutinized, and scientists should always consider that their foundational ideas are wrong, or flawed. This does not suggest that we ought to be soft on ID, or other forms of supernaturalism. There is a reason why materialist objections to evolution are more readily accepted by the community at large than those invoking the supernatural. The Discovery Institute is well-staffed by philosophers of science, so they ought to be quite familiar the reasons why this is true.
